University of Philippines Guitar Orchestra

               The University of the Philippines Guitar Orchestra is the FIRST Guitar Orchestra in the country. Founded in 1997 by its music director Mr. Lester Demetillo. It is composed of outstanding students majoring in Guitar from the University of the Philippines College of Music. The 21 guitars that make up the UPGO include the prime guitars (most commonly known as the classical guitar) and 2 soprano guitars. In order to widen and achieve the preferred range of register, the UPGO is planning to add a double-bass guitar.

               The UPGO has performed in all major concert sites in the country namely: the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Concert at the Park, etc. as well as regular concerts at the University of the Philippines, where the UPGO is based. The UPGO will make its first national tour to Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental at the Silliman University this March 1, 2008.

               The UPGO has a wide range of repertoire that includes music from the renaissance, baroque, classical, romantic, 20th century periods and other genres like jazz and pop music. Mr. Lester Demetillo (founder-musical director) transcribed almost all of the pieces in the UPGO's library. His arrangements and transcriptions are enormous; from Nicanor Abelardo's enthralling Visayan Caprice to Mozart's Divertimento in B flat Major.

               Mr. Lester Demetillo is a teacher at the U.P. College of Music since 1980. He has given classes in Indonesia and Singapore and he also served as an examiner for the Association Board of Royal Schools of Music in Indonesia. He has arranged and transcribed countless pieces of classical as well as Filipino pieces. He has performed in countries like the U.S.A., England, Australia, Japan, and Holland to name a few.
